Roxburgh Gorge Trail

ROXBURGH GORGE TRAIL

Take on the gorge with a ride through this craggy river canyon before catching a lift on a water taxi to connect onto the next section that climbs up through the semi-arid rocky landscape providing outstanding views over the waterway and the gold mining relics and shelters of yesteryear.

The trail is generally wide, with a good surface and undulating gradients. A ride in the gorge is suitable for most riders and is a great day out to combine both a trail and river ride.

Roxburgh Gorge Trail Map

The Roxburgh Gorge Trail is an 'A to B' trip between Alexandra and the Roxburgh Dam. The trail is divided into two sections (plus a 13km jetboat trip to join them) that make up a one day journey.

The trail can be ridden in either direction but if completing the entire trail make sure you pre-book the jetboat in advance, as there is no cellular coverage at the pickup points. An alternative start point is from Clyde down the Millennium Track to hook onto the Roxburgh Gorge Trail - this is not part of the official ride but is an amazing and peaceful trail.

The trail is suitable for most riders and generally has a good wide surface. Some parts may be difficult for some riders with steep drop-offs beside the trail and gentle, steady climbs. The trail is all off-road, with a gravel formation and good gradients.

Jetboats operate between the two trail sections that may eventually link once ongoing land access issues are resolved. The boat trip between Doctors Point and Shingle Creek provides a historical context for the gold workings and the challenges miners faced in this harsh climate.

Toilets are located in Alexandra and at the two boat pickup points, and the only services are in Alexandra and Roxburgh. There is no, or poor if any, mobile coverage once on the trail. A trail ticket system using tags (in conjunction with the Clutha Gold trail), can be purchased from information centres, operators, and online to support future trail maintenance.
